18 Mar Trompe L’Oeil at it’s best for Georgian luxury design schemes
A recent visit to Rome has left me completely inspired by the traditional and extremely effective technique of Trompe L’Oeil. As I walked around the Vatican Museum it was not the artefacts on display that took my breath away but the stunning architecture, in particular the ceilings of the building. It was only upon careful study of these ceilings that I was able to decipher that many of them contained elements or were entirely decorated with Trompe L’Oeil. It made me think about how these could relate the the Georgian luxury design schemes that we do at Etons of Bath…
Quite understandably, it is often the Sistine Chapel ceiling and fresco by Michelangelo that gets the attention and this certainly takes some beating.

This was, to a degree, expected but what surprised and delighted as much was when room after room presented the most incredible ceilings adorned with decoration, classical scenes and trompe l’oeil. Here are a few of my favourites.
Stunning. For me this illustrates just how timeless design can be. The geometric ceiling would look at home in many contemporary interiors today.

How can you not look upwards when this is what lies above?
It makes you realise what a missed opportunity a plain white ceiling can be. Why not get creative with your Georgian home? Seek to add the next layer of contemporary history with a fresco or trompe l’oeil on the ceiling. Failing this, get on a flight to Rome and experience these delights yourself.
