Classic Contemporary Townhouse

Georgian townhouse overlooking Clifton Suspension Bridge, where classical architecture is balanced with contemporary furnishings.

EntraNce Hall

The entrance hall sets the tone, with a bespoke marble floor design featuring an inlaid border, classic lanterns and contemporary wall lights chosen to sit beautifully alongside the original fanlight above the front door.

Drawing Room

In the drawing room on the principal first floor, moulding details were added to the walls to create a panelled design, achieving a careful balance between the classic and contemporary elements.

study

The study continues the restrained classic-contemporary language of the wider scheme, with elegant proportions, soft colour and carefully chosen furnishings creating a composed and practical room.

Kitchen Diner and Breakfast Room

The drawing room opens through a square arch into a kitchen diner, with a light-filled breakfast room beyond. With Crittall-style doors at the entry to the breakfast room and French doors with an original ironwork balcony overlooking the garden, the transition through these spaces becomes progressively lighter and more modern while retaining a clear sense of continuity throughout.

Bedroom Suites

The second floor was reconfigured to create individually tailored his and hers suites, connected by a Jack and Jill bathroom and complemented by two dressing rooms. Each bedroom was given its own distinct character through specialist feature wallcoverings and a personalised colour palette, while both favour contemporary forms in furniture and lighting.

Dressing Rooms

The dressing rooms were designed as tailored, highly personal spaces, combining practical storage with softer seating, refined lighting and carefully detailed joinery.

Bathroom and Shower Room

The bathroom and shower room continue the tailored feel of the bedroom floor, combining marble, refined vanity detailing and a quietly luxurious material palette.

A Georgian Townhouse Reimagined for Contemporary Living

The owners of this elegant Georgian townhouse in the heart of Clifton were moving from the country house that had been their family home into the next chapter of their lives. Through our Stylefinder process, we established that they wanted interiors with a more contemporary feel than those they had previously lived with.

At the same time, the scheme needed to respect the architecture of the house. Alteration works were already under way when we were appointed, which created a compressed design programme and required swift, carefully coordinated decisions. The arrival of the pandemic briefly paused work on site, allowing the scheme to be worked through in greater detail.
