11 Aug Did you know?
The canopy of the Soane family tomb, cited in St Pancras Gardens, with its shallow dome on four piers is thought to be the inspiration for Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s 1924 design for the K2 telephone box.
I’ve just been back to The Sir John Soane Museum and, walking around the house, can see that this is very likely. Soane’s use of the canopy form for ceilings, cappings and clocks for his house at 14 Lincoln’s Inn Fields is quite clearly a trademark of his style. Watch out for my upcoming blog post, looking at what we can take from the Georgian interiors of Soane’s house, for period properties and their interiors in todays modern world.
